Mini-Nubian Goats: Charming, Friendly, and Surprisingly Practical

Introduction:

One of reasons we bought our micro-farm was to gain control of our food supply. Our ultimate goal is to grow or raise our own healthy food to the fullest extent we can. We started, as most folks do, with a vegetable garden. Then we added laying hens, and after that, meat chickens for protein. We hope to add pork next year.

But this year, I decided to address our lack of dairy animals. We are dairy junkies; milk, butter, yogurt, sour cream, and cheeses are part of our daily diet. Unfortunately, our farm is far too small for cows, or even full-sized dairy goats. Happily, we can support a small herd of miniature goats.

Among the various options available, Mini-Nubian goats are favored for their small size, ease of handling, and sweet personalities. Although still considered an “experimental” breed, these goats are fantastic producers and a joy to own. In this blog post, we’ll delve into our decision to raise Mini-Nubian goats for dairy products, explore their unique characteristics, and share the joys they bring to small-scale farming.

The Advantages of Mini-Nubian Goats

  1. Compact Size and Easy Handling: Mini-Nubian goats are well-known for their petite stature, making them an ideal choice for our small farm. At about half the size of standard Nubian goats, minis are easier to handle, and can be supported on as little as 500 square feet per goat (with supplemental hay or feed). Since goats are herd animals, we purchased three siblings; two does and a wether and they are all quite happy to be together. As someone brand new to raising goats, I find these mini goats to be just about perfect!
  2. Reduced Feed Needs: One of the significant advantages of raising Mini-Nubians is their reduced feed requirements compared to larger dairy goat breeds. Our three goats are on a quarter-acre split pasture, which provides approximately 50-70 percent of their diet. We supplement with goat pellets and grass or alfalfa hay. This makes them a cost-effective choice for homesteaders on a budget.
  3. High Milk Production: Despite their smaller size, these goats are efficient milk producers and can produce up to a half gallon of creamy, delicious milk. Nubians have been selectively bred to improve the taste and creaminess of their milk. From their Nigerian ancestry, they gain a sweet, high butterfat milk, and from their Nubian side, they get their impressive production and udder conformation that makes them easy to milk. Thus, they are a near-perfect choice for someone who is new to dairy goats.
  4. Less Frequent Heat Cycles: Unlike some other dairy goat breeds, such as Nigerian Dwarfs, Mini-Nubians have seasonal cycles, so may come into heat less often. This is THE reason I went with mini-Nubians instead of Dwarf Nigerians: I didn’t want to listen to bleating goats every three to four weeks! This characteristic also simplifies breeding management, providing a more predictable schedule and reducing the stress associated with constant reproductive cycles. However, Mini-Nubians may also exhibit “silent heat” where bleating and other behaviors are mild or not noticed at all. In this case, a wether or buck may be the best indicator of when your doe is in heat. Which is why we have a wether.
  5. Feed and Shelter Needs: Mini-Nubian goats thrive on a diet consisting of good-quality hay, fresh water, and a balanced goat feed. Ensuring they have access to essential minerals and vitamins is crucial for their overall health and milk production. These minerals can be offered separately, or be included in their feed. When it comes to shelter, a well-ventilated and secure barn or shed is essential, protecting them from extreme weather conditions. Supplemental heat is generally not needed, as long as their shelter is draft free, and ample dry bedding is provided. While these goats are adaptable, providing a comfortable and stress-free environment contributes to their well-being and productivity.
  6. Friendly and Adorable Personalities: Beyond their practical attributes, Mini-Nubian goats are appreciated for their friendly and affectionate nature. Their docile temperament makes them suitable for families, including children. These goats quickly become beloved members of the household, offering companionship, laughter, and genuine enjoyment. Their charming personalities contribute to a positive and fulfilling experience for those embarking on the adventure of dairy farming.

Conclusion:

Our decision to raise Mini-Nubian goats for dairy products has been a rewarding journey filled with fun and practical benefits. From their small size and reduced feed needs to their friendly disposition and adorable appearance, these goats offer a manageable entrance into home-based dairy farming. Whether you’re a seasoned farmer or a novice enthusiast, the Mini-Nubian goat promises an enriching experience that blends the joys of companionship with the satisfaction of producing fresh, high-quality dairy products.
